Last May, I went to Huntersville, NC for a workshop Donna Downey`s Store with Danielle Donaldson. I love her style of watercolor and since I have not studied watercolor before, I was anxious to learn all I could while there.
I have done a few watercolor girls since then but have wondered to other things too. Her brand new book has just come out and I got my pre-ordered one in the mail this week. I was inspired all over again!!
Creative Girl Mixed Media Book is full of pictures and instructions and lot of fun ideas..
So, I got my watercolor paper back out and sketched a few pictures.. and added some color to them..
and another one…. trying to use her instructions but develop my own look… still working on that but such fun!!
I had sketched this one too, with the same light color scheme in mind…. but as I was doing it, it went a different direction with the colors…
I used copic markers for the first time. Some I had splurged and bought a while back with my 40% off coupon from Michaels!! I had gotten the flesh color set and really had wanted to try them, so I pulled them out for this girl, and tried them with her face.. Have not completely figured them out yet but I like the way they go one. They don`t blend as easily, but then again, maybe they do and I don`t know how to do it!! Anyway, I used markers for her dress. I didn`t actually like the way her hair looked with the markers, so I painted over it then applied some different colors of watercolor to shade it. She was a little more work and lots more layers….. highlighted with white uniball marker and she was done.
That was my week… Some art time, a bit of work on orders, and fun with new books..
Happy to be linked with Sunday Sketches this week. here

Hello Jane! Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog.
Your art portraits and figures are wonderful! I’ve never worked with copic markers. I like the effects and transparent layers you achieved with them. The watercolor versions have a softer, pastel color while the copic marker version has a deeper hue almost like oils. REally cool.
thank you Juana! Glad you came over to visit!! I for sure want to play with those copic markers some more… I am sure there is so much more that they can do than I even imagine. Always something to learn, right?!! Have a great rest of the week!
I love your sweet girls! How fun that you got to go to donnas studio!
thank you Debbie, Yes it was a great time to go there and see her shop. You should put that on your bucket list! They are both super nice, her husband and Donna… it was a special weekend!!

Oh my goodness, they are so soft and lacy. I love the gentle colors. They each have darling personalities showing through. I really love that last one. Good skin color and great hair.
thank you Wanda. Just always am drawn to those girls… Gotta branch out one day and do something out of my comfort zone, but it is fun still learning all the different techniques… Thank you for coming by !
Getting a new art book is always such a great way to get those creative juices flowing. Beautiful renderings.
